If you put in the effort you can’t fail to learn it .I went to Brazil for six months, all I had was a Portuguese … English dictionary , but being surrounded by people who were only speaking Portuguese it didn’t take me long to learn the basics.

As a suggestion for you to take into account is that the best places to learn spanish in Latin America (because of the neutral accents) are both Colombia and Guatemala. I know that learning spanish in Guatemala (Antigua Guatemala to be exact) is more cheaper than in Colombia. And one of the advantages is that Antigua is a small colonial city 45 minutes away from Guatemala city, and its full of people from all nationalities (specially europeans) that are learning spanish and you can practice the language very easily. Another advantage is that in Antigua, being a touristic place, you can easily get a job in any of its multiple restaurants and bars.
